What is Bridge of Hope?
“Nearly one in four Washingtonians have stopped talking altogether with either a friend or a family member because of politics. People feel divided. Oftentimes, it feels like you can't talk to your neighbors. People feel isolated. They feel polarized. It's not just about politics—it's a lot deeper and broader than that.”
Denny Heck, Lieutenant Governor
Washington
In a community divided along lines of politics and identity, how do we create space for repair and authentic connection? How do we overcome the isolation, fear, and enmity?
The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties (YMCA PKC) serves as a shining example of positive change. Their acclaimed Bridge of Hope initiative uses Reflective Structured Dialogue to help people overcome mistrust and polarization by convening public discussions around shared values, important issues, and diverse perspectives.
“Bridge of Hope is really bringing the community together and strengthening it through dialogue,” says Janele Nelson is the Association Mission Director for the YMCA PKC.
The program began with community dialogue, but it has spread. One faculty member has begun using RSD at a local community college. The YMCA PKC is leading internal dialogues about its values, vision, and future. And the inspiring work of YMCA PKC has led to a national collaboration between Essential Partners and YMCA locations in Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, and Alabama, among others.
This inspiring program has now impacted the lives of thousands of people in communities across the country. That's the power of hope. That's the power of dialogue.
