Dialogue for Collective Action

What time should the school day begin? What policies should a company enact regarding equity and inclusion? How does a faith community identify its charitable goals?

Practical decisions about collective action can raise underlying, unexpected, and often polarizing differences of values, beliefs, and identities. And if those differences aren’t acknowledged, they can drive dysfunctional patterns of communication, fraying relationships and building bad faith. Agreements about collective action are more likely to last when relationships are strong.

Essential Partners’ approach to dialogue and civic engagement reaffirm that all stakeholders share a common investment in their community, organization, or institution. This two-day workshop will orient participants in how to leverage their dialogue skills to accomplish shared goals.

  • To learn to map the situation and better understand the history, issue, broader context, purpose, politics, and roles;
  • To identify members of an effective planning and implementation team;
  • To explore how dialogue and dialogic practices can build relationships and construct appropriate next steps and processes.

As a result of this workshop, you will be equipped to:

  • Facilitate collaborative action that emerges from relationships founded upon mutual understanding;
  • Address the diverse interests that underlie stakeholders’ positions;
  • Utilize participant resources to help projects move forward together.
